Welcome to The Raven Saint month!

Every friday in December, I will post something about my upcoming release, The Raven Saint. All you need to do is leave a comment about the post and I will enter your name to win a free copy of the book. I will announce each week's winner the following Friday.

Simple Huh?

I'm very excited about this book! When I began the story, I thought it would be difficult to get into the heroine, Grace's character. Of all 3 sisters in the series, she was the sister I identified with the least! But as I progressed, I realized something very shocking. Some of Grace's worst qualities were also my own. Yikes. I wonder if you'll discover the same thing.
So without further ado, here's an in-depth look at Miss Grace Westcott.

Grace Westcott

Brief Description: At twenty years of age, Grace Westcott is the youngest of four sisters. With raven-colored hair and eyes a deep shade of emerald green, she’s been told she has beautiful exotic looks. But Grace closes her ears to such praises. Vanity only swells one’s pride, and pride goes before a fall. And she cannot allow such idle flattery to deter her from her mission to ensure her sister’s eternal salvation and attend to the poor in Charles Towne. Though not as petite as her sister, Hope, nor as tall as her sister, Faith, Grace tries to hide her medium, yet curvy, build beneath high-necked, loose fitting, plain gowns. There is no need to become a temptation to any of the men in Charles Towne. Not that she has received any unwanted attention—or any attention at all, for that matter. Besides, she is too busy aiding the poor and preaching to her sisters of the evils of sin, to have time for courting. If only they would listen to her, Grace is sure her sisters would save themselves a lot of pain and heartache. Yet despite Grace’s self-righteous attitude, she is a kind, generous lady who loves God and who would gladly give up her last meal to help someone in need.

Strengths: Self-sacrificing, Generous, Clever, Strong Faith, Confidence
Weaknesses: Judgmental, Idealistic, Lacks compassion for sinners, Nosy, Stubborn

Quirks: Grace wears a cross around her neck which is usually tucked within her bodice. When she’s nervous or upset, she pulls the cross out and rubs it. Also she throws a hand to her throat to cover up her exposed skin when she’s nervous. She says “Mercy me” all the time and is very outspoken about other people’s faults.

Inspiration: I love Grace’s character. I’ve seen her in so many people around me. She’s got a great heart, loves God, loves to help others, but she has one major flaw. She is too quick to judge everyone around her for any sin she sees in their lives. Since she has never had it rough in her life, since she’s always had a home and food and love, she cannot understand why people commit sin: why they steal or cheat or lie or are immoral. She only sees the sin, the top of the iceberg and refuses to look beneath. As a consequence, she comes across as being very prudish and self-righteous when in reality she only wants people to go to Heaven. More often than not, I find I can easily slip into this kind of attitude, judging the actions of others without truly knowing their heart. But wait until Grace runs into Rafe Dubois, the vile mercenary who kidnaps her from her home.

  1. I always saw Grace's good intentions in the first two books, but never really sympathized with her, because she was so stuck up! I can't wait to see what transformations are in store for this character. Maybe I'll run into Faith and Hope???

  2. Friday, December 4th, 2009,
    Dear Marylu,
Your newest book "The Raven Saint" promises to be a big hit ! Myself (along with others) will certainly be able to identify with Grace's strengths, but even more so ... her weaknesses. Judgmental ... hmmm, yes, I am. And who am I to judge another ?
So often I judge "a book by its cover" (so to speak), and so often, I am wrong about the person.
Until we have dared to "walk a mile in another's shoes" ... to understand, show compassion, to empathize with another, to love that person in the Lord and into His Kingdom ... who am I (or we) to judge (lest I be judged) !!!
Grace sounds so "human", as are we all. None of us have anything to be self-righteous about ... yet, we tend to be that way ourselves !
"Thank-you" for bringing us yet another adventure of excitement, romance, danger, and God's unconditional Love.
    God Bless you Marylu,
    In Him, Brenda Hurley

  3. Waiting anxiously for this book!
I agree with Casey's comment above. Grace's transformation will be quite interesting.

  8. Maybe I don't want to read this book. . . sounds like it could be my autobiography! LOL & OUCH!

Seriously, can't wait for it to come out!

  9. Oh, I can't wait for this book! I love the cover; it's beautiful! Grace's character seems like she has a lot she can teach us as she goes on her own journey in the book--it's good to be reminded of the importance of not looking down on others, but rather trying to be understanding and compassionate. Thanks for an opportunity to win this book!

  10. Can't wait till it comes out - I especially love reading historical books in which the characters are struggling with the same things that we do today, because it really puts into perspective how time really makes no difference in the eternal realm of things.
Thanks for holding these drawings, MaryLu!

  11. Can't wait to read it!

  12. Wow...she looks like Amanda Peet. :)

  13. I look forward to reading your new book! Thanks a lot for putting up this contest to possibly win this book!

  14. In "The Red Siren," whenever Grace was in the picture, it did seem she was judging and self righteous. I kept thinking, "I cannot wait for her book!" You don't have to put my name in the drawing, I just wanted to tell you I cannot wait for this one! Great description, by the way! [=

  15. Well, I have been waiting for this book and your pre-release comments on it for quite a while! Hmmmm, Grace... I can't say she's won me over yet. It's probably true that many of us demonstrate her same attitude in certain situations, but I just can't figure out how she could be SOOO opposite from her sisters who are both "bad" girls in their very different ways. I am looking forward to seeing how her character develops through the circumstances that will confront her.

  16. Hey, my name is Amber! Just wanted to say that I'm really excited for this book! Please enter me in for the chance to win it! Thank you! God Bless!

  20. Thank you MaryLu for reminding me about the book give-a-way every week in Dec. in my face book account.

    Please enter me

  21. Looking forward to reading your new book!

  22. Grace's strengths sound like my daughter. Not so much the other ones, tho it will be interesting to see how her faith changes since she's on her own in college.

That "Mercy me" just cracks me up!!

I love the Revelation song on your sidebar and I'm happy we have the option to follow you!!!

  23. Your newest book sounds really great. You have created a character who as real as life. Grace is a Christian and follows God but she also has her faults. She's not some perfect heroine but a well rounded character. She is more believable and relates easily to people today. Christians today follow God's will but they are not perfect. They still struggle and need God's guidance. I believe you have written a winner in this book and series.

  24. Haven't read any of the previous books. Do I need to? Please enter me for this one. Thanks.

  25. Thank You so much Mrs. Tyndall for offering us this chance of receiving your latest book, "The Raven Saint." I have waited so long to read this book. I read the other two about a couple of months ago in and I am so excited about this one. You are truly the best christian historical romance writer.

  26. This book looks like such an exciting read. Please enter me in the giveaway.

  27. I can't wait to read this book! And the cover is beautiful : )
    Jennifer Fleming

  28. Wow, I'm exactly like Grace! With the compliments thing, her way of dressing, preaching to her sisters, all of her strengths, kindness, love for God, almost all of her weaknesses. I also wear a cross around my neck and play with it. However, I'm not 20 or have green eyes or youngest child, I don't say "Mercy me" (but that's cute). Besides from that we are pretty similar, I hope that is not a bad thing. :)

My goodness, I can not wait to read this. Your books are always so influential to me MaryLu. With their lesson packed adventures and interesting characters. My goodness I need to finish The Blue Enchantress...its bugging me. :) God Bless you MaryLu! Thank you for this opportunity to possibly win your book.

  29. I CAN'T wait for the Raven Saint to come out!! I am counting down the days! It is going to be great!

  30. Grace sounds very interesting. I actually have not gotten to read the Blue Enchantress yet. I'm hoping to get it for Christmas : ) But I'll be interested to see which of the girls I have the most in common with.

  31. Wow, I am really looking forward to The Raven Saint. I have a feeling I'll be experiencing a little bit of loving conviction along with a really great story :o). Thanks so much for writing stories that are both a joy to read and ones that God can use to affect change in our lives. Can't wait for January!

  32. This book sounds awesome :)
I can identify with Grace a lot, actually. I am too quick to judge. I'm not outspoken about it, but inside my head, I keep this checklist of what everyone around me is doing wrong and it effects the way I relate to people. I'm working on it though!
I'm asking for this series for Christmas.

  33. I really want to read the whole serires but this was the book that spoke the most to me! She does seem like someone I can identify with, hopeful not too much! ;)

  34. I love your books and can't wait to read this new one! Grace sounds like a very interesting person.

  35. Hi MaryLu
From the first time I read about Grace in the Red Siren I've loved her the most! People so saldom write about good people growing in faith and love. It's always about the bad guys getting saved. I've always tried to serve God though I'm by no means perfect. I identify with Grace's caracter the most in her lack of attracting male attention
Mostly due to my disibility at 17 I've also not had a guy look at me as if I'm beautiful or anything. Not that it matters all that much but it's just one of the reasons why I like reading about Grace
    Be blessed

  36. Oh, this aught to be fun getting to know Grace a little better. I'd love to be entered in your book giveaway. Thanks

  37. This is gonna be fun! Can't wait to read the book.

  38. I really look forward to reading this book on Grace. She sounds a lot like me, a little different, but a lot like me nonetheless. Seeing how her character is molded by the Potter's hands will be a captivating experience.

  39. I've been so excited for this book to come out--I can't wait to hear what happens next, not just with Grace, but with Faith and Hope!

  40. I loved how you turned the other 2 sisters into such nice and faithful women after they were not such nice and faithful women. I can't wait to see what you do with Grace. I have an Aunt Grace who is the most wonderful prayer warrior and full of integrity. If your Grace is half as terrific as my Aunt Grace, she will be a wonderful person. I love all your books and await each with bated breath. I only wish you'd write faster. :)

  41. I am quite excited for this book to come out. I actually put in a purchase suggestion at my local library for the second one and they bought it! I borrowed it last week and while my mom was here visiting she read the whole thing :) Keep up the good work.
    Amanda L

  42. I am soooo excited to read the next book!!
